Sivasri Ragunatha Kurukkal was born on 11th November 1954, to the notable Sivasri Sivakadadcha Kurukkal and Gomathi Ammal. Being the 5th child of the family with one elder brother, three elder sisters and three younger sisters, he started to do his divine work to Lord Ganesh at the young age of seven at the one and only Karphaga Vinayakar Temple in Jaffna Sri Lanka. His work at the temple and to Lord Ganesh had left an incredible impression on him as a small child.
Ragunatha Kurukkal married Annaluxmy, who was born to Nataraja Kurukkal and Meenakshi Ammal on the 20th August 1975. They have five children, one daughter and four sons. Due to the political instability in Jaffna he moved to Kandy, Sri Lanka on April 1993, where he continued his divine work to Lord Ganesha in the revered Sri Selva Vinayakar Temple for more than five years. It seemed that Lord Ganesha was with Ragunatha Kurukkal since the time he started his divine work, guiding and caring him in every step he took, never letting him slip out of sight, almost like a father who takes good care of his new born.
It’s only true that Ragunatha Kurukkal was blessed by Lord Ganesha when he moved to Australia on May 1999. He continued his Godly deeds in various Hindu temples throughout Australia from the notable Murugan Temple Sydney to Melbourne Vakratunda Vinayakar Temple. He was moved when he learnt there was no Ganesh temple in Sydney, after deep thoughts he wanted to start and foster the first Ganesha temple in Sydney. He established the first Ganesha temple on 2003, naming it Sri Karphaga Vinayakar Temple. Ganesha might have billions and billions of names but Sri Karphaga Vinayakar was the name that left an incredible impression on Ragunatha Kurukkal.
Blessed was Ragunatha Kurukkal, after only one year of the initial establishment of the temple, his whole family was allowed to migrate to Australia on 29th April 2004. Since then the whole family has dedicated their entire lives in the service and gratitude to Sri Karphaga Vinayakar, with Vithyadaran and Nizatharan following their father’s foot steps and carrying out the divine works to Lord Ganesha. Miracles are witnessed throughout the world, and the life of Ragunatha Kurukkal is one such a case, with Lord Ganesha being the Miracle doer.
Presently Ragunatha Kurukkal is 56 years and still is active in his works to Lord Karphaga Vinayakar at the temple in 123, The Crescent Homebush West 2140. Asking him what motivates his work and dedication, his reply is “Lord Karphaga Vinayakar”. Those three words seem to be the mantra of this man’s life: a true miracle indeed. Punyavachanam is a pooja performed at various occasions such as a child’s birth, death of a person and after coming of age. Depending on the occasions, this pooja carries varying spiritual meaning and attributes. Child birth punyavachanam is done for the purity of the house and for the wellbeing of the child, the naming of the child is also carried out after the pooja. Punyavachanam is done after the death of the person to enable the person to reach a state of moksha from the earthly life. Coming of Age punyavachanam is done for the wellbeing for the purity and the wellbeing of the individual.
Rudu Shanthi coming of age ceremony is carried out to signify that a boy or girl is mature enough to understand his responsibility towards family and society. Hinduism also has the sacred thread ceremony for Dvija (twice-born) boys that marks their coming of age to do religious ceremonies. A full green pumpkin vegetable is hung outside the window for 3 days to ward off evil spirits.
Aandu Thivesam carried out on the first anniversary, according to the lunar calendar on the Thithi on which the person died, a memorial service is performed and a priest officiates in this ceremony which is similar to the monthly Masiyam but is called Aantu Thivasam. Some relatives are invited by some families and a meal will usually follow. Sometimes a pooja is carried out in a temple instead and offerings are made to the Gods. Usually affordable people feed the poor and or orphans in memory of the person passed away in their family.
